Dear Nova Fans,
I thought you might enjoy the debate we’re running on whether the NCAA should bar poorly-performing schools from the NCAA tourney.
* Ben Miller of the think tank Education Sector makes the case that the startling academic failure of some schools cannot go unpunished. He praises Villanova basketball for their high graduation rate as a top team. (http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/2010/03/15/ncaa-should-bar-low-graduation-rate-schools-from-march-madness.html)
* Author Marc Isenberg argues that rather than punish schools for poor academic performance, the NCAA should just admit that their “student athletes” aren’t amateurs but are professionals playing in the equivalent of the NBA’s and NFL’s minor leagues (http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/2010/03/15/ncaa-should-admit-its-march-madness-players-are-professionals.html)
You can find the main page for the debate here: http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/2010/03/15/should-graduation-rates-affect-ncaa-march-madness-bids.html
Enjoy!
