Big East Quarterfinals: Louisville-Providence

(1) Louisville 73 (8) Providence 55:  The Friars may have needed this game more, but in the end the superior talent on the Louisville Cardinals wore down their opponent.  Although the Friars stuck around for awhile, the Cardinals eventually ran away with an easy 18-point victory.

Even though Louisville won by a comfortable margin, the game was not without its mistakes.  The two teams combined for 46 turnovers that led to fast breaks and easy lay-ups.  Louisville was able to overcome those turnovers better than Providence because of their superior advantage in the paint.  All-Big East third team member Earl Clark had a monster performance with 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.  Meanwhile, fellow Louisville forward Samardo Samuels exerted his massive presence from the opening tip and finished the afternoon with 22 points and seven rebounds.  The two combined to shoot 20-28 from the floor.

Unfortunately for Friars fans, their NCAA Tournament hopes seem to have died with the loss today.  Providence was unable to connect from beyond the arc shooting 2-17, and it was the main reason they were unable to ever sustain a comeback.

With the win, Louisville now advances to the semifinals where they will play the winner of Villanova- Marquette.  The Cardinals have not lost to either team this season.
