Quick Recap: Villanova 74 Marquette 72

A year ago, Villanova opened its season with a loss on the road to Marquette.  Same location and same place a year later, Scottie Reynolds made sure there was a different result.  With the team trailing 72-71, Reynolds took the ball from the top of the key, threw the ball between his legs to elude two defenders and finally sank a mid-range jumper while being fouled.  Although he missed the free throw, the shot was enough to put the Wildcats ahead for good.

The basket accounted for the final two of Reynolds 23 points on the day.  The senior guard played his best game of the season, sinking every shot Villanova needed and finishing 8-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Reynolds was aided by the stellar play of freshman guard Maalik Wayns, who came off the bench to score 16 points.  In his first Big East game, Wayns did not look intimidated for a second, as he drove to the hoop for a basket on his first possession.

Senior guard Reggie Redding was the only other Wildcat in double figures, scoring 11 points.  Although Redding struggled from the field (3-for-11), he hit five free throws down the stretch, including the final Villanova point that pushed the margin to two.

Marquette, who now has lost five games by four or less points, had several opportunities to win the game in its waning moments.  Junior guard Jimmy Butler missed a contested layup with less than 10 seconds to play that would have put the Golden Eagles up one.  At the end of the game, Marquette trailed by two but failed to get a shot off before the buzzer.

The Wildcats will return home on Wednesday when they will face DePaul.
